One of the oldest of Costa’s ships, the 1992 vintage Allegra was rebuilt from the hull and engines of a former container vessel and turned into a cruise ship. This was long before the days of sister ships built in classes for four, five or six, and almost a decade before Carnival Corporation took full ownership of Costa.
Activities On Costa Allegra
So the Costa Allegra remains a quirky relic of another era, full of charm and whimsy for people who like that kind of thing, and appreciate an alternative to what many consider to be the cookie-cutter boredom of many a megaship. A classically Italian décor of Old World architectural elements predominates. Much of the artwork onboard was inspired by the great European painters, such as Gauguin, Degas, and Matisse. Each deck is also named for a master artist, such as Van Gogh, Rousseau, or Lautrec. There is an abundance of glass, affording refreshing views of the sea.
In keeping with its vintage, the Costa Allegra has touches that you won’t find on a lot of cruise ships today. A three-deck-high atrium lobby is dramatic without being overbearing. Another nice aspect is that the Costa Allegra carries only about 800 people when fully loaded - compare that to the average megaship with a capacity of 3,000 or more!
Dining On Costa Allegra
For those who find the myriad public rooms of a megaship overwhelming, the Costa Allegra provides a welcome relief. There are only three venues for dining: One traditional main dining room for formal sit-down meals and the buffet restaurant for casual self-serve breakfast and lunch. An alternative restaurant serves upscale dinners by reservations only, for an extra charge of course. This space is the architectural gem of the ship, with curved glass facing aft over the stern and a domed skylight above.
There are just six bars for relaxing and socializing. Even so, activities are plentiful and nightlife is active onboard, with a disco for dancing, a casino for gaming, and a main theater for the customary cruise-ship production shows. Children have their own small but dedicated playroom with Sony PlayStations for video gaming. Modern conveniences include a small internet center for getting online.
Out on deck, the Costa Allegra sports a small spa and fitness center with high-tech workout equipment, two swimming pools—one for adults and one for children—and two Jacuzzi whirlpools.
Cabins On Costa Allegra
Outside cabins are small but feature unusual double portholes. Upscale accommodations include 13 suites; 10 of these come with private verandahs.
Costa Allegra belongs to Costa Cruises' Allegra Class of cruise ships. This Costa ship features a specialty à la carte restaurant, a multitude of colorful bars and lounges, and an atmosphere of Italian style fun.
